Pharmacists across Merton are encouraging local residents to discover what expert medical advice is available on their doorstep to mark Ask Your Pharmacist Week.

This year's theme is to "Discover Your Local Pharmacy" and the wide range of services which are on offer.

Sedina Agama, Chief Pharmacist at NHS Merton Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) said:

"People are often surprised at how many services are easily available at their local pharmacy. Lots of pharmacies are open until late and at weekends. You don't need an appointment – you can just walk in and get expert advice on your medicines, conditions and treatments straight away."

"This week, why not ask your pharmacist for advice about what medicines should be in your cabinet and how to help you and your family get through the winter season."

Pharmacists are trained experts in using medicines safely. They can advise you on the safe use of prescription and over-the-counter medicines. If you would like to buy an over-the-counter medicine, the pharmacist can help you choose one best suited to your needs. They can also advise you on whether you need to see a GP.

Often, people make unnecessary trips to the GP or even A&E, when the neighbourhood pharmacy could help instead. It is essential that older people seek help as soon as possible to prevent a trip to hospital if their condition gets worse."

Chief Executive Officer of the Merton, Sutton and Wandsworth Local Pharmaceutical Committee Andrew McCoig said:

"All pharmacies now have consultation rooms where you can discuss your health concerns privately with a pharmacist, and they will refer you to another health care professional or service whenever necessary. Your pharmacist can offer you the winter flu vaccination, health checks; help to quit smoking and treatment for minor ailments.

Please do call in and meet your Merton pharmacist this week to find out more."
