Stub it out during Stoptober
Each year thousands quit smoking for 28 days with Stoptober starting on Saturday 1 October.
By joining in with the 28-day national quit attempt, smokers can access a range of free support including email, app and Facebook Messenger - all providing information, advice and daily tips to help them through the month.
Merton CCG is supporting the NHS campaign, which to date has encouraged nearly a million people to sign up to 28 days smoke-free. Director of Public Health Merton, Dr Dagmar Zeuner, said: "By making it to 28 days smoke-free, people are five times more likely to quit for good. During Stoptober everyone quits together, supported by employers, communities, charities and other partners, as well as encouraging each other via the Facebook page."
The aim of Stoptober is to encourage smokers to take that all-important first step towards a smoke free life – whether their attempt is for the first time or the latest of many. Dr Dagmar Zeuner said: "Quitting is the best thing you'll ever do, and Stoptober is the right time to do it. Your health, your family and your wallet will all thank you for it!"
If you think that Stoptober is the right time to stop smoking, there is plenty of advice and free support to help you stop for good.
Support with smoking is available in Merton from GPs and pharmacies, while the NHS Smokefree website provides a smartphone app, free Quit Kit, and email and text messages to keep your quit attempt on track. NHS advisers are also available on the phone, call 0300 123 1044, or via the NHS webchat service.
Stoptober is run by Public Health England, and was launched in 2012.
