Sunshine Recovery Café provides vital mental health support at Christmas
Wimbledon's Sunshine Recovery Café will be open for their first festive season to offer mental health support to local residents.
Christmas can be a difficult time particularly for those living with mental health conditions but this year the café will be open throughout the festive season every day welcoming people who need support to manage mental health crises.
On Christmas Day the café will be laying on a special lunch with traditional festive games including charades.
The aim of the Café, which is open 365 days a year, is to support people to reduce their immediate crisis and anxiety, and to prepare a safety plan, drawing on resilience and coping mechanisms. They are an alternative for people who may present at A&E because of their mental health and are an out-of-hours service to support people when other services are closed.
Dr Andrew Otley, local GP and Merton CCG Clinical Lead on Mental Health said:
"At Christmas coping with extra stresses and pressures can become overwhelming. Support is available at the Sunshine Recovery café. There's no need for an appointment, just turn up and you will be offered a friendly welcome. If you have friends or family who are struggling over the holidays do let them know about the café."
The Recovery Cafe is based in Wimbledon and supports adults (18 years+) with mental health issues from the South London boroughs of Wandsworth, Merton, Sutton, Richmond and Kingston.
The café based in Kingston Road opened earlier this year is commissioned by South West London and St George's Mental Health NHS Trust, with the support of all Clinical Commissioning Groups in South West London (Kingston, Richmond, Wandsworth, Sutton and Merton).
