Nelson Health Centre wins prestigious national award

NHS Merton Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG)’s new facility, The Nelson Health Centre, has scooped a national award for the Best Primary Care Development at the prestigious 17th annual Building Better Healthcare Awards held on November 4.

The Awards celebrate innovation, architecture, people, products and services that are transforming patient care in the UK.

The judging panel said: ‘This development shows very clever use of the old buildings in the area. It fits in remarkably well with its surroundings.’

The Nelson Health Centre, a flagship service designed to bring better healthcare closer to home for Merton residents, opened this April.

‘I’m delighted that our new development has received national recognition,’ said the CCG’s Director of Commissioning and Planning David Freeman. ‘I’d like to congratulate everyone who contributed to making this a world-class facility, helping us to improve both the care and outcomes for patients.

‘The opening of the Nelson Centre six months ago was a major step forward in the realisation of our ambition as a CCG to provide more services closer to home. This means, for example, that local people can receive outpatient and diagnostic services in a convenient and accessible community setting rather than hospital.’

The Centre provides GP services, consultant-led outpatient appointments, therapy services, services for older people, minor surgery and procedures, X-ray, ultrasound, blood tests and community mental health services.

The award for the Nelson Health Centre was presented to the building designers Murphy Philipps Architects and the CCG’s Project Director Sue Howson.
